Etiquette in the Emoji Era

Pulling it straight from #BYDN this week…right from page 16 (crack open your book and pull out your highlighter):

Hallmark cards and custom stationery may have gone the way of the JPEG but that doesn’t mean your communications or etiquette need to suffer. No one knows this better than Erin Newkirk. Erin founded Red Stamp, a technology company that makes it easy to thank, announce, wish, or simply say hi from your mobile device, desktop, or, yes, even on paper with an old-fashioned snail-mail stamp. Erin launched Red Stamp in 2005, before the onslaught of social and mobile communications.

Etiquette doesn’t get left in the pre-digital past because you’re invited to a dinner party via text….be generous when invited to connect: RSVP promptly, arrive at the designated hour and thank the host (whether that’s via Instagram, text or oh my! a handwritten note).

As Erin shares in #BYDN on networking and generosity:

  1. Say thank you and to be thankful. “It’s how I end almost every conversation and oftentimes how I introduce myself or say hello (“Hello, my name is Erin and I am grateful to be here. Thank you for having me.”).
  2. Give before you get. Offer up help before you need or even expect a thing.
  3. Keep in touch — this doesn’t always mean a note or a call. Send a gesture, such as endorsing someone’s skills on LinkedIn or reviewing their business on Yelp.
