Networking…it’s not just up the corporate ladder, it is down, around and sideways too. It’s not about kissing butt or hobnobbing with higher-ups …networking is mentoring, training and genuinely leading, making an effort to help others succeed in their career with no other expectation than a simple desire to see them succeed.
I’m mulling on this because of my recent #BYDN talk at Google HQ in Mountain View. The invitation to speak at Google, the organization of the talk and host of the talk came from one person: Abby Bouchon Daniels. Abby was my intern back in the summer of 2012. We’ve stayed in touch since then through social media (yeah Twitter and Facebook!) and managed to catch up over tea in Bryant Park once when work brought Abby back to NYC. We’ve each stayed interested in how the other person is doing.
Being asked to speak at Google — right up there on the book tour highlights list. HOWEVER, being asked by a former intern and having her interview me, that truly made this #BYDN book tour stop special.
