J. Kelly Hoey - Build Your Dream Network

Lawdy, this is so on point! As are all of your messages these days. I read them just to crack up at some point during my day.

I do love reader messages (as I know a lot of you are reading these things and as you’ve not unsubscribed, I can only assume you’re finding useful tips & links or simply enjoying my rants & humor.

The “Lawdy, this is so on point!” was sent in reference to this Networking Pro-Tip.

Amen! and now, back to ???? from my inbox, starting with a couple of IRL networking opportunities taking place in sunny California:

  • June 7 in LA – Gaingels Board Member Mix & Mingle (an opportunity between CEO’s of their portfolio companies, who are interested in finding new board members or advisors and potential high caliber candidates across their partner network).
  • June 15 in Menlo Park – MDC 2023 Reception & Dinner Women’s Networking Event & Program. (JD Supra)
  • June 6 in NYC – join the Neo Club and La French Tech for a panel (The Consequences of Geopolitics on the Future of Energy) and networking night with entrepreneurs, investors, creators, artists and tech enthusiasts.
  • June 7 (online) – join Penguin Random House for Reimagining Sisterhood featuring SISTERHOOD HEALS author Dr. Joy Harden Bradford in conversation with Rachel Cargle, author of A RENAISSANCE OF OUR OWN.
  • June 8 is the deadline to apply to participate in Bank of America Breakthrough Lab™. The 6-month program offers pre-seed stage companies from underrepresented communities a chance to scale, establish industry connections and pursue funding.
  • June 13 (online) – Salesforce’s 6th annual racial equality summit, Representation Matters, presented by Deloitte Digital.
  • June 15 (online) – Celebrate Pride with a Random House Group and Left Bank Books workshop about writing the stories of your heart led by Camille Kellogg, author of Just as You Are—a steamy, witty, Pride and Prejudice-inspired queer romance.
  • Board Roles! Board Roles! Advisory! Non-Exec Director! Board Member! Trustee! Chair! Read all about ‘em (ExecThread)
  • Whoop! Kudos to my pal Lauren Maillian on her new newly created c-suite role – Lauren Maillian Joins Hero Media as President, Digital Innovation (Little Black Book). I’ve known Lauren since 2011’ish – and she is an inspirational, accomplished badass (she was when I met her, and even more so today). In 2022 ALONE, Lauren landed on the Create & Cultivate 100 List, named a LinkedIn Top Voice in Entrepreneurship, plus JPMorgan Chase & Co recognized Lauren for her commitment to advancing business growth and entrepreneurship in the Black community.
  • The Women In Innovation Awards are back for 2023. As a global platform to celebrate and elevate women, this year’s WIN Awards theme is all about Movers & Makers
  • How many women artists can you name? Art historian brings attention to overlooked women in The Story of Art Without Men (PBS) with a h/t to the Girls That Create newsletter.
  • Tory Burch Foundation has announced their 2023 cohort of Tory Burch Foundation Fellows. The 50 women entrepreneurs represent a range of industries and business models – so learn all about them, as perhaps applying to be a fellow of this amazing program should part of your venture’s future (FYI, the fellows receive a year of education, peer networking, advisory opportunities + more).
  • A great resource for writings and aspiring authors – Manuscript Wish List – straight talk and access to publishing industry insiders.
  • Want to spark creativity…then start peeling potatoes. 3 Scientifically-Proven Tactics To Focus Your Mind And Spark Creative Ideas (Forbes) with a h/t to Monica Parker’s weekly Wonderbringers newsletter (together with the entry below).

We are gorgeous machines designed by evolution, as well as by our environment, education, friends, families…

  • Your Brain: Perception Deception (NOVA)
  • I just finished reading Katherine May’s The Electricity of Every Living Thing: A Woman’s Walk In The Wild To Find Her Way Home – the story of the author’s late diagnosis of autism and how she gained understanding of her differences through the exploration of wild spaces. BTW her hybrid memoir Wintering is absolutely gorgeous, prompting me to read more Katherine May. Her story, along with my friendships with neurodiverse individuals, is why I’m strongly recommending My Truth About Dyslexia a chat with Keisha Swaby and Leah Black on Tea Chat with Diahanne Rhiney (so, not just sharing this conversation because Leah’s fab mom messaged me about Leah appearing on her first podcast!).

AND one more thing….

I’m thrilled to be heading to Paris to speak at my friend Anne’s game-changing event for women entrepreneurs – InvestHer Summit 2023. What you need to know (as yes, you should be attending, for funding insights, industry connections and because community is capital):

  1. Conference dates: June 29 – 30
  2. Location: Rive Montparnasse (Crédit Agricole Insurance Building, next to La Poste Museum) at 44 Boulevard de Vaugirard, 75015, Paris.
  3. RSVP and join a delegation for 20% off your ticket price at investhersummit.com
