Friends, fans, followers – what’s an influencer doing when they have a job and a life offline too? Alessandro Piol spills his daily social habits.
Name: Alessandro Piol
Title: Venture Capitalist and Author
Me: Which social media/networking site is your first site of the day - and why?
Alessandro: Alternates between Twitter and Facebook. I use both to post comments and articles, but I seem to get more discussion on Facebook. Twitter has a broader flow of news though. I was very passive on Facebook until a few months ago, but I have been much more active on it recently.
Me: What types of content are you drawn to or what conversations do you engage in?
Alessandro: I engage on my topics of professional interest, personal causes or personal improvement. Topics of professional interest are venture capital, entrepreneurship, innovation, and more technical topics like enterprise software, real time data, security, distributed systems. Personal causes include Columbia University (alma mater and a supporter of entrepreneurship programs there), women in tech, STEM education, TiE (mentoring organization), and some areas of health research and genomics. Personal improvement includes health and fitness, mindfulness, self improvement in life and business, and various other topics.
Me: What makes social media valuable (or enjoyable) for you?
Alessandro: Reading news, learning and being entertained are the main drivers. Keeping up with friends is also valuable. And getting to know new people is valuable.
Me: Could you give up your social networking habit if you had to?
Alessandro: Difficult. You become dependent on reading what people post, and then reacting to it. I guess you can cut me off and I’ll have more time to read the newspaper but it’s not as much fun.
Me: Do you use hashtags?
Alessandro: Yes. #VC, #NYTech, #TIENYC, #Columbia, #CSNYC, #WomenInTech, #RealTimeData, #Cloud, #InfoSec, #BlockChain,
Me: How frequently do you post on social media?
Alessandro: Every day.
Me: Do you use any tools / platforms to manage your social media accounts? If so, which ones?
Alessandro: I sometimes use Hootsuite, but I am not overly satisfied with it. I use it to cue up articles that I read and like on Twitter and Facebook.
Me: Who or What are your favorite sources of insight?
Alessandro: There are a few friends on Facebook who posts articles I am consistently interested in. Reese Jones and John Hagel are two such people. And of course @jkhoey …
Me: Who or What are your favorite sources of amusement?
Alessandro: I like humour, so anyone who posts jokes or puns or funny stuff is a good source for me and I tend to repost. I also like inspirational quotes, poetry and stuff that makes you think.
Me: What do you use to post to social media?
Alessandro: Mobile, Desktop
Me: When do you use laptop, mobile, or desktop to post to social media?
Alessandro: My laptop typically sits at the office attached to a large monitor, so I consider it a desktop. I seldom take it with me unless I go for a long trip. Shorter trips and throughout the day I use my iPhone. I have another desktop at home that I use. In the office and at home I rather use the desktop because it’s a larger screen and better experience. But my iPhone is basically an extension of my body, so I check stuff on it continuously. And now with Apple Watch there’s a new way to check important stuff, so I do that too.
Me: Which other social networking sites are your go-to sites?
Alessandro: LinkedIn, Instagram
Me: Where can we follow you online?
Alessandro: @Ilmago, or aapiol on Facebook. Also linkedin.com/in/apiol or veleno on instagram
Me: Anything else you'd like to add......
Alessandro: Social networks can be very time consuming. One is probably better off allocating some time every day to them, but not be connected constantly. Otherwise you get into ADD mode and get nothing done …
