Finding the perfect apartment and roommate in New York City…who has time for that stressful task! Finding a roommate for new professionals in the Big Apple is the problem entrepreneur Sarah Hill is solving. Sarah is the founder of Perfect Strangers, a roommate matching company. Like the perfect concierge (or butler) Sarah and her team help individuals find rooms to rent (within their budget), in their desired neighborhood, and most importantly with roommates that they are compatible with. Sarah is also a member of Dreamers // Doers, a highly curated community of high-achieving trailblazing women who come together to support each other on their entrepreneurial paths. The community encompasses a diverse mix of female founders, women working at startups, and other female creators, change-makers, and influencers.

Me: Why are you an entrepreneur?

Sarah: I’m an entrepreneur because I have strong instincts about people and business.

I truly enjoy strategizing and coming up with ways to improve new or existing business comes very naturally. It’s very rewarding to put my natural talents to good use, especially for my own company that I am truly passionate about.

Me: What problem would you like solved?

Sarah: I am solving the issue of living in NYC affordably through my company, Perfect Strangers. We are a roommate matching company, that helps people find rooms available within their budget, in their desired neighborhood, and most importantly, with compatible roommates. I realized that Millennials are much more interested in a “Sharing Economy.” Especially when it comes to their homesteads. But the issue is how to find the right person to share that space with. That’s where we come in.

Me: Advice you’d wished you’d had or had followed?

Sarah: I wish I set out to find a co-founder from the inception of Perfect Strangers. Now, four years into it, I can’t fathom having someone come in at my level. Which has proven difficult, but I am working on building a strong managerial team to take the place of a co-founder.

Me: What does success look like for you?

Sarah: To be honest, I am not sure! Success is such an arbitrary word. I’ve had many successful moments/milestones in my life, especially post college life. I was able to move to NYC on my own, and start a company that was immediately profitable. Not only was I able to make a living off of it, but it was something I was truly passionate about. Now, being 27 years old and running a business full time for two years, I am now ready for the next success/milestone. And for me, that’s leveraging! I need to hire and train a team that can

Sustain the business without my direct involvement!

Me: Who are your heroes?

Sarah: My mother. My mother is the strongest person I know. My father was in and out of prison while I was young and my mother was able to raise us on her own with no help from him, nor her family. When my father finally got his act straightened out (around 6 years old) my mother knew it was important for us to have a relationship with him. She allowed supervised visitation and eventually my father stayed sober and turned out to be a great dad. I believe she saved his life by allowing us into his life. We were his motivation to stay straight.

Me: What is your best discovery?

Sarah: Understanding that I haven’t reached my full potential. I’m a bit hard on myself- there’s always something more I should be doing. I have a hard time feeling accomplished, even though I know I have done more than most people my age. I was watching a video about reaching your potential and I soon realized that I haven’t done that yet. I’m hard on myself because I know I can achieve more.

Me: What would the title of your biography be?

Sarah: I’d rather be fulfilled and poor than numb and rich.

Me: What is your biggest regret?

Sarah: I honestly can’t say that I have a regret. I am a true believer in everything happens for a reason and thinking positively. If I perhaps made a bad choice about something, I see it as a positive as I can now learn from my mistake and not do it again.

Me: Anything else we should know about?

Sarah: I am producing a web series called “The Savvy Renter.” It’ll be videos of how to find apartments and live in NYC affordably. My spring ambassador program with a handful of college students was a great success and we will be expanding that program to five more Universities next fall! Our new website launched and is kicking butt! And I have hired! Will have a team of 10 within the next month.
